Carl Van Vechten was an interesting man who, starting in the 1930s, photographed just about anyone who was young, gifted and black. He also wrote flowery prose and a controversial novel, all while living a privileged life in Manhattan. John Hammond was jealous of him, celebrities were made to feel at home with him.
