It was an enjoyable Saturday afternoon devoted to Lester Young, with first-hand recollections, general discussion, and some amazing film footage and recordings. Museum Director Loren Schoenberg knows how to get it together. I recommend a visit to the museum, which is housed at 104 East 126th St. until work is done on the ultimate location, across the street from the Apollo Theater.     what a shame that i live on the other side of the world not to come to this great evening. can you tell us what kind of amazing film footage you have seen at this evening? i think that mr. schoenberg plays also gems from the savory collection!?

    Loren ran an exceptionally pristine print of Jammin' the Blues, sharper than any I have seen before (and I have seen this gem many times). The Savory Collection material was new (to me) and exciting, and there was footage from Art Ford's TV show that cannot be repeated often enough. Besides that, we heard wonderful recollections and anecdotes, and there was a remarkable, unaccompanied live performance by Sam Newsome. He also joined in later, when Loren, Ethan and Lewis later took turns at the piano that had once belonged to Dick Hyman.
